Food packaging is packaging for food. It requires protection, tampering resistance, and special physical, chemical, or biological needs. It also shows the product that is labeled to show any nutrition information on the food being consumed.
Reduced food packaging and sustainable packaging are becoming more frequent. The motivations can be government regulations, consumer pressure, retailer pressure, and cost control. (Reduced packaging often saves packaging costs.. In the UK, A Local Government Association survey produced by the British Market Research Bureau, compared a range of outlets to buy 29 common food items, found that small local retailers and market traders "produced less packaging and more that could be recycled than the larger supermarkets.

1. The Food Doctor Wholesome Crisps Best Food Packaging Designed by Falcon
“London agency, Falcon, has designed packaging for The Food Doctor’s new range of Wholesome Crisp Thins – an exciting range of Soya and Corn Crisps available in four sophisticated flavours (Hot Wasabi, Mild Korma, Spicy Chipotle, and Sweet Chilli), along with a Natural Multigrain variety pressed from 5 different cereals.
The packs answer the challenge to clearly communicate the health benefits of the crisps (they deliver high protein and fibre, along with 50% lower levels of fat than typical crisps) without compromising taste appeal, and compete effectively on shelf against other gourmet snacks.”
2. Maison Dandoy Best Food Packaging Designed by Base Design
“With values rooted in the past but a business plan oriented toward the future, Dandoy asked Base Design in 2011 to modernize and rethink its visual identity, packaging range and website. The main questions to solve were “How do you transform a small-scale, local family business into a global family brand, without losing the image of local craftsmanship and true tradition?” and “How to reach a broader audience?”.
To tackle these questions, Base Design started with interviews in the field to gauge the context. This was followed by an analysis of Dandoy’s assets, opportunities and brand experience, a benchmark study, ideas for improvement and a workshop with the client. All this resulted in about ten design-strategy recommendations followed by a graphic design phase.”
3. Mighty Rice Best Food Packaging Designed by mousegraphics
“The briefing (in brief): We want a packaging design that will communicate the difference in quality, the refined character and the exceptional origin of our product. The target audience: An eclectic but low-key clientele. The design: To meet the expectations of an overseas based client was a challenge we accepted with enthusiasm. Our design approach developed through a series of emails and skype calls between Athens and the exotic Mauritius, whilst we gradually absorbed the information that described this food product as ethically cultivated and dynamically positioned in the contemporary market. This experience was incorporated into the design framework. Thus, a mighty combination between the stated, the symbolic and the imaginary emerged. The essence of the island and the grain -the basic unit of every rice production- are rendered visible through clear, dynamic albeit elegant, transparent, duo-chromatic (b&w), non-folkloric design choices.”
4. Røkeriet Best Food Packaging Designed by True Design

10. Èlia Olive Oil Best Food Packaging Designed by Atipus

Èlia’s first product is a selection of aromatic oils.”
11. Side Project Jerky Best Food Packaging Designed by A Well Respected Man
“Side Project Jerky is the result of countless hours spent testing marinades and drying times for perfectly flavored and textured jerky. Born in the kitchens of work colleagues Marcos Espinoza and Mark Novasack and ultimately conceptualized over a few pints with the help of brand strategist Daniel Olsovsky, Side Project offers its customers a pause from the demanding life of a gentleman. Each flavor is first vacuum sealed and individually hand wrapped in its own (unique) re-purposed mechanical drawing that would otherwise be tossed in the trashcan (we hate wasting paper) The packaging also references Marcos’s primary occupation as a construction manager.”
12. Eat 17 Bacon Jam Best Food Packaging Designed by Together Design
“Together Design has created new packaging, point of sale and web design for quirky artisan condiment Bacon Jam. Concocted by independent bistro Eat17 in Walthamstow Bacon Jam started out as a local phenomenon but newly launched with branding by Together Design, has now secured shelf space at Tesco.
Together Design worked with the artisan producer to develop distinctive labels and messages that stand out on shelf and celebrate its meaty and modern credentials.
“Katja Thielen, Creative Director at Together Design says “Bacon Jam is an unusual product and that sense of creativity was the starting point for the branding. Relishes don’t usually contain meat, so we needed to convey that strongly on pack. The other task was to develop a quirky tone of voice to bring out its artisan character”.
13. Student Work – Collin Cummings Best Food Packaging Designed by Collin Cummings
“I fell in love with the idea of repackaging honey because of the timelessness of honey production. The process employed by honey bees hasn’t changed. To reference this highly industrial procedure, I chose a typographic direction that felt sterile. To counterbalance the type, I designed a few complicated and emergent patterns that hide behind the color of the honey when the bottle is full. As you use the product, the elegant patterns are revealed in a second layer as a homage to the beauty and timelessness of such a refined and perfected practice such as honey production.”
14. Williams-Sonoma Pasta Best Food Packaging Designed by Williams-Sonoma Brand Packaging Dept.
“As part of the new ‘pantry essentials’ line of products within the Williams-Sonoma stores, this package was meant to be a modern interpretation of simple and classic pasta packaging. The intention was for it to feel high-end and artisanally crafted to highlight the single origin nature of the semolina flour used to made this hand-cut pasta.”
15. Fresh Fish Pack Best Food Packaging Designed by PostlerFerguson
“Supermarkets are expanding their fresh fish offerings to include more sustainable species like gurnard, mackerel and skate. These fish are cheaper and just as tasty, but customers often shy away from them because they are unfamiliar and occasionally just plain ugly.
This fish packaging proposal helps put these fish back on equal standing with their more recognized brethren by placing them in an attractive and highly recognizable packaging solution. The packages are intended for use at fresh fish counters. Constructed from a double layered polyethylene, they are airtight, resealable and can be filled with ice for transport to keep your fish fresh until it hits the pan!”
16. Reishunger Bio-Risotto Best Food Packaging Designed by Grabowski Böll
17. ÍZ Best Food Packaging Designed by Eszter Laki
“I was invited to my mother’s garden in Szentendre to pick apricots. The result was at least 5 kilos, so I had to think about a way to save it for the winter. I asked my friends to help me, so we decided to make jam out of it. We boiled and peeled them, and used a secret recipe of my friend’s grandma. Next day we filled the jam into small jars, from then on I only had to think about some branding. Íz means “taste” in hungarian, but also the name of the jam you fill the pancakes with.”
18. Filippo Menna Best Food Packaging Designed by Angelini Design
“A package destined for the foreign market, that expresses the taste and spirit of a typical Italian product: Pasta Garofalo arrives in Brazil with Angelini Design.
The packaging of pasta Filippo Menna has been studied by Angelini Design to export our good name overseas: the classic transparency of the packages was joined by a symbol of the Vesuvius and the traditional color of the city of Naples, light blue. The Italian touch on this packaging is evident, inside it is the most traditional line of products for Garofalo: this pasta in fact takes its name from the son of the Group’s president, and is prepared according to the classic recipe of Gragnano.”

The clean and clear lines provide the customer with an easy and informative pathway to connect with the culinary world under the sea.”
21. Student Work – Dan Moukatel Best Food Packaging Designed by Dan Moukatel
“This project tests the boundaries between designing and chemical data. During my research on salt, I discovered that the salt that we all are familiar with and use for cooking purposes, actually plays a much bigger and important role in our lives. It turns out that salt is found in almost any chemical element around us in different amounts and dosages.
During the production procedure of table salt in Dead Sea Works, four other chemical elements are being refined: potassium, aluminum, bromine and magnesium, from which we produce all sorts of materials that are of use to us in daily living. In my project, I decided to focus on the four chemical elements and to visualize the changing of the salt in each one of them.”

24. Mas Marcè Best Food Packaging Designed by Senyor Estudi
“Every good countryman curses the bones of the thrush because in cold weather it is this bird that eats the olives. Nevertheless, this fact indicates a healthy olive grove. And this is true in the case of the olive grove based on ecological production, from which a native variety extra virgin olive oil known as Argudell is extracted. Illustration and typography merge to represent this scene, taking advantage of the round drop that reminds one of an olive hanging from a branch that has just been broken off.”
25. Student Work – Kamila Mitka Best Food Packaging Designed by Kamila Mitka
“Kasha Kasha is a new Polish brand of carefully selected eco-friendly agricultural products. The brand is targeted at young consumers concerned about healthy eating. The main objective of the project is a display of honesty. The cardboard packaging communicates unambiguously its ecological sourcing, while the subtle colouringis the effect of the application of eco-friendly printing methods. The image on the front of the packaging underlines the tradition associated with the product. Raster used for the image of a mill is intended to reflect the textureof the grains inside the box.”

28. A. Heirloom Best Food Packaging Designed by enormouschampion
“We worked with A. Heirloom, a company that makes US state-shaped cutting boards, to design a single box that could house all of their different shaped boards. The solution was to create a “periodic table” of state-shapes that could be marked off to indicate the box contents. There is also an additional “other” box for their occasional custom request.”
29. Student Work – Bryan Ku Best Food Packaging Designed by Bryan Ku
“Realizing that most people have a difficult time gauging how much pasta to cook. This is a fictional brand and packaging for pasta. The sustainable, cylindrical structures functions to help isolate the correct amount of pasta per serving while differentiating itself amongst its competition of sacks and boxes.
The caps double as a measuring device. The length of the caps are determined by the volumetric space of one serving size of any short-cut noodles.
Long noodles utilize an alternate mechanism within the cylinder. By rotating the upper half of the structure, the top of the package reveals an opening that allows exactly one serving size to pass through at a time.”
30. Etesian Gold Best Food Packaging Designed by mousegraphics
“Brief: we market our premium product abroad and mainly in the Far East, where it is considered a cosmetic, aside from being consumed as a precious food item.
Audience: consumers who appreciate pure ingredients and the rituals relating to their consumption.
Design: targeting a cultural milieu with very specific communication semiotics and particular habits, we opted for a design which, subliminally, speaks about archetypes, about the signs and symbols of the oldest civilizations. Product of an ancient land and a sacred plant, the ‘etesian gold oil’ is saved in an elegant bottle. It is sealed with the graphic symbol, used in linear b (an ancient greek pre-alphabet syllabic script) to mean ‘olive’. Color tones and hues are kept to the minimum of an earthly palette.”

Fortunately, some specimens survived on a farm in Castelló d’Empúries, which led to the recovery of this special breed.”
34. Lyons Best Food Packaging Designed by jkr
“This month sees the launch of newly designed packaging for Lyons cakes. Briefed to explore and celebrate the brand’s rich heritage, the new look plays back to its famous history of teashops and its waitresses from the 1890s.
With a long-‐standing tradition for ‘proper’ cakes, the brand was renowned for its nippy waitresses serving up affordable tea and cake to the masses. Having lost its way over the years, the redesign focused on communicating the brand’s story in a relevant and contemporary manner.”
35. St.olive Best Food Packaging Designed by mousegraphics
“Brief: we are targeting a selective and well informed clientele, abroad. We want to stress the special qualities of our product.
Design: since our client wanted to avoid having a ‘provenance-oriented’ identity, we turned to the area of basic human aspirations. Creating the product’s identity, we resorted to a singular combination of metaphysics and humor. We used the term “St. Olive”, not in a religious context, but as an attempt to bring forward the chthonic, primary, life-giving character of the oil fruit. Design helped us make this approach more concrete and acute: it placed a hand – the very representation of the spiritual and the divine- within the area of the ritual, the human and the feasible. In this way humor allowed for process to emerge as the care needed to make things great. We even collaborated with a painter specializing in byzantine iconography, in order to be faithful to the codes of the symbolic language we chose. It was our way to confirm once more what we believe is on the basis of every communication: everything, from the simple to the complicated, is “a leap of faith’ and one there is no reason to take without being well prepared.”
36. E/M Jam Best Food Packaging Designed by Eszter Laki
Packaging design for a self-made strawberry jam. “When the season finally arrived, we went to the strawberry fields close to Budapest to fill up our buckets with this small delicious fruit. After puddling and boiling them for hours, we mixed it with fresh mint, and poured it into small jars. Our jam is called “Eperlekvár mentával” in hungarian, so I used just the first letters. I made a stamp and prepared all the labels manually.”

Cuberdons Léopold is a yound and modern brand of cuberdons that wants to modernize the product but also keep the vintage image by using graphical elements such as purple stripes that remains the beach huts of the Belgian seaside. The drawing face is reproduction of the face of King Léopold 1st, first king of Belgium, who has marked the independance of the Kingdom of Belgium in 1831, a period when cuberdon has been invented. The box contains 21 cuberdons, a reference to 21st July (Belgian National Day).”
43. Mediterra Best Food Packaging Designed by Cipmann
“Cipmann was asked to create visual identity and packaging for the homemade honey and honey-based products that would emphasize their local origin and high quality. We came up with the brand name Mediterra (‘med’ is Croatian word for honey, and ‘terra’ is Latin for land, earth) and the identity that evokes natural balance and puts the bee in the primary focus.
The package design is inspired by traditional jars of homemade food which were extremely simple and had just a name sticker on them. The label on the jar is as simple as it can get. If we would to remove just one more element, it wouldn’t function any more. The color of the honey is actually the primary differentiator between the products, as it was in the old days. We think that the unobtrusive label lets the rich color of the honey speak for itself. And it speaks volumes.
The jar also contains a coaster doubling as a business card, situated under the jar’s ‘cap’ so the jar doesn’t stick to the surface.”
44. Ursula Best Food Packaging Designed by Eszter Laki
“Package design for a self-made bear’s garlic pesto.
We went to the hills to pick kilos of this delicious plant (also called ramsons or wild garlic) and couldn’t wait to make pesto of it. Grana padano, pine nuts, olive oil and spices made the pesto fresh and tasty. The name of the brand (Ursula) is based on the latin name of the plant (allium ursinum).”
45. Student Work Best Food Packaging Designed by Mara Rodríguez & Beatrice Menis
“The aim of this project was to design a packaging for take away. We chose to focus on lactose intolerance, offering take away dairy-free breakfasts! At Müd we offer cupcakes, donuts, cookies and loaf cakes which you can combine with coffee, tea or hot chocolate and everything is without lactose!Feel free to add any type of dairy-free milk that you want such as almond, rice, oat, etc.We offer two different packagings, one for the combination of coffee and cookie/loaf cake and a bigger one of coffee and muffin/donut.Everything comes with two different kind of stickers, both applied on the sides of the packagings, ones with what there’s inside of the packaging and the other ones with emotional sentences about your mood. Finally we wanted to create a brand specialized in dairy-free products but with a modern graphic style which could easily reach to a bigger target.”

50. Tesco Fresh Fish Best Food Packaging Designed by R Design
“R Design was approached by Tesco to redesign their entire range of standard and standard plus fresh fish that covered over 50 lines.
The idea was to emulate the buzz and atmosphere of a bustling fishmongers/fish market. The labels were designed to reflect the hand crafted feel of a chalkboard. All the typography was hand drawn and paired with illustrations that highlight the fish type. On the standard plus lines the illustrations change from the fish to that of the flavour or ingredient that comes with the product. e.g. King Prawns with Chilli & Coriander.
Bright colours are used throughout both ranges to differentiate between the fish type and create hierarchy within the product titles and descriptions. The design was able to adapt across several pack formats achieving a consistent look across the range and strong stand out on shelf as well as engaging the consumer.”
51. Student Work Best Food Packaging Designed by Melanie Chernock
“One of our assignments was to redesign the packaging for De Cecco, a famous brand of pasta. The brand takes pride in their high quality pasta and Italian heritage. Because De Cecco is so well known and familiar to many, I decided to keep the original logo to offset the very modern redesign. A large window was chosen to emphasize the product while the rustic box and sticker label mimic the homemade packaging of fresh pasta.”
52. Rahal Farms Best Food Packaging Designed by Anderson Design Group
“Back in late fall, architect and farmer Michael Rahal approached us with a branding opportunity. He founded Rahal Farms, which is located in the historic farming village of Fernvale, Tennessee. His farm practices holistic, sustainable land stewardship, compassionate animal husbandry, and educational community outreach in order to produce healthful, delicious and ecologically sound food. The goal of our branding was to suggest artful, healthy, earthy farm-fresh goodness while keeping the happy animals at the forefront. With his hens producing 400 eggs a day, we scrambled (no pun intended) to create an egg carton label so he could start selling his delicious farm-fresh eggs. He was looking for something that would really set his eggs apart on the store shelves and elevate his product above all others in the same category. We achieved this by choosing a colored carton with a wrap-around label that featured custom typography and illustration in complementary colors. The final label was printed on French Speckletone Paper in Cream Cordtone.”
53. Simply Oil Best Food Packaging Designed by Glendall Design
“You are likely to be familiar with the bright yellow fields that populate the countryside but are unaware that Rapeseed can produce a culinary oil that boasts half the saturated fat of olive oil, high levels of Omega 3 and 6, and is produced using nothing artificial. 56. Tesco Cream Best Food Packaging Designed by R Design
“The brief was to redesign Tesco’s range of fresh cream that covered over 30 lines. The existing design focused on serving suggestions. Whilst inspirational, this made the range very difficult to shop the specific cream type.
The idea behind the new design was to create a quality seal that takes cues from old fashioned dairy cream pots. Bold typography is used to highlight the cream type, this is supported by strong colour coding of the seal that follows sector language. This strong simple idea was able to adapt across the various pot sizes and lids. The design also worked well when applied across range extensions such as Soured Cream and Crème Fraiche. The new design achieves a consistent look across the range, a strong shelf presence and succeeds in making the range much easier to shop.”

59. Ocado Best Food Packaging Designed by jkr
“This month sees the launch of Ocado’s new packaging design, creating a fresh identity for the brand.
The new look & feel designed by jkr builds and elevates the existing Ocado brand mark, creating a distinctive and attractive design system which can work across the brand’s diverse range of own label products. This was then rolled out and implemented by the internal design team at Ocado.
As an online grocer, Ocado products are bought online and delivered straight to the door, so the redesign presented a unique opportunity for the creative work to exist outside the normal constraints of a supermarket environment. Free from the pressures of building navigation and appetite appeal, the design could focus on strengthening brand affinity.
