Everyone is unique and special. People are not born with equal talents. That means, not everyone has a good drawing ability. This may be a factor in some people reluctant to apply the process of sketching in their design projects. Yet in practice, the sketch is very helpful for designers to solve problems in their design projects. Is really that important? Well, we will discuss several major factors on Why Should Graphic Designers Sketch For Their Design Projects
What are the importance of sketching in graphic design?
Work Faster
Working with pencil and paper will be much faster than a mouse and computer. With a sketch, we can make a lot of possibilities and alternatives in a short time. Computers in this case only serves to end the execution of a work. For example, when creating a logo directly using the computer I will only produce two or three alternatives within 1 hour. But if I work by using sketches to begin with, 1 hour might result in about 10 alternative logo in a various form. Much faster right?
Developing Idea
The important point of the sketch is, its ability to explore new ideas and new possibilities very quickly. Each scratch is the beginning of the opening lines to every new possibility, a rare thing that we find when working directly with the computer. Many graffiti sketches that seem unclear, but in fact it is the beginning of the creation of great works.
Keeping your Ideas and Inspiration
As a designer you should familiarize yourself to bring a pencil while traveling or hangout. Many new ideas usually come on when you're not at your computer but eventually forgotten because it is not saved. With the sketch you can keep it easily. It may be the inspiration that we keep in the form of sketches will be useful in your future design projects .
Presentation to the Client
For complex design projects and full of detail can take up to several days. Imagine if we have to present some alternative designs to clients. This is where the role of the sketch will be very important in providing a visual picture of a complex design to the client. It is enough to make several sketches of the design and present it to the client, and then choose one of all to be executed into a digital format using graphics software. Of course these measures will save much time and effort that might be used for other things.
Sharpen your drawing skills
Although not actually a graphic designer should be able to draw good, but still manual drawing skills will greatly assist in the execution of each design project. Sometimes a design project requires some illustration which demands a good ability to draw manually. So it never hurts to get used to playing with the sketch to sharpen your drawing skills. The more drawing exercise the better you in drawing.
Practical to carry around
Pencil and note book is practical to carry around. This means that we can work in many places only with the equipment. Maybe a laptop too, but it would be troublesome if you have to open a graphical software for the sole purpose of a sketch, we can work even while hanging out just with a pencil and your notebook then you can immediately begin creating new possibilities for your design project.
