Graphic design is a field that requires the ability to think creatively to solve the problem. It's not only about the ability to think, it also requires the designers to be able to execute as well as possible and visualize the results of their thoughts into their
works. Both these points may be described as a concept and execution. Two things are interrelated also support each other in creating an effective design work.
Concept
The concept is an abstract thought. It has become a planning map that can be useful as a guide to the designer in the act and make decisions. The concept originated from an idea that later developed to align and clarify the various possibilities.
Why does graphic designer need the concept?
Graphic design aims to communicate the message effectively through visual form. In order for a message can be delivered properly, then it will require a strategic plan developed through a process of creative thinking. Good design is design that begins with a brilliant idea and is packed in a good concept and it should contain a meaning that supports the message. A design without a concept would end up biased due to merely hold on aesthetic beauty without the support of strategic planning that communicative in the delivery of the message.
There are several ways that can be maximized in order to produce an interesting design concept. But in essence, a brilliant idea came from a broad understanding and knowledge of design object. Professional designers always start with research to obtain critical information related to project design as much as possible. The information is then processed in such a way through the stage brainstorming to produce an idea that could be developed into an interesting concept.
Execution
Execution is the stage where the designers begin to visualize the ideas and thoughts into the form of graphic works. Execution requires visualization capabilities as well as good technical from the designer. There are many factors that could affect the ability of execution. Such as: experience, aesthetic considerations, taste, understanding the design principles, knowledge, etc.. Thus, the execution does not only include the ability to use graphics software such as: AI, PS but more than that, the executions require comprehensive capabilities of a graphic designer either in principle or technical.
an example of execution of the work:
Brazil World Cup 2014 logo has a design concept described hands to form a trophy, it's a very interesting design concept! But what about the execution? I think it's boring. The hands on the logo graphically looks like a picture of a first-grade, seemed like a poorly made and does not look professional.
Spartan Golf Club logo is an example of logo design with an excellent blend between concept and execution. This logo is smart to use negative space to illustrate two different symbols into a unique and simple work.
Conclusion
A concept originated from an idea that comes from understanding and knowledge and processed through brainstorming process While the execution is a process of how a visualized concept into a design work. The concept and execution are two vital things in work on a design project. both are related to each other to optimize the message in a work of design.
